FAQ: BUYING FOR A PRISON INMATE – READ THIS IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Do we know what we’re doing? Yes; we’ve been doing this for over 20 years! Buying the Prisons Handbook for a prison inmate, and having us deliver it to the prison, is simple and straight-forward, all you need to do is follow what we tell you below and if, in addition, you enter your phone number during the check out process we have a way of contacting you if there are any problems.
Will the prison accept the book? Yes. The Prisons Handbook is a Prison Service approved publication (and we are an approved Prison Service supplier) for all prisons and young offender institutions in England and Wales. Therefore you can be assured that when buying the book for an inmate, which we then send to them using the details you provide in the check out process, the prison will accept it – once you have ordered we recommend that you ask the inmate to make a formal application ‘to have The Prisons Handbook in possession on arrival’ – so that when it arrives it can be given to them straight away.
Can anyone send the book to an inmate? Yes – from 1st September 2015 Prison Security Regulations changed so that anyone can send in the book to an inmate – but if you choose to do this you need to know that it has the following important cost and delay implications for you.
Firstly we give an almost 50% discount on copies bought for prisoners, but this discount only applies to copies sent directly from us to the prisoner concerned, so we can be sure that the book is genuinely for an inmate. If you choose to have the book sent to you, for you to send it to the inmate, you will lose the inmate discount.
Secondly, we are an approved Prison Service supplier so books sent from us to the inmate bearing our NOMS Approved Supplier details are generally issued straight away – books from family, friends or other non-approved sources will be subject to security inspections and this is likely to cause delay in the book being issued.
Finally, sending the book to the prisoner direct means you have to pay two lots of postage – one for us to send you the book, and again when you send it to the inmate
If you are buying for an inmate it makes sense to allow us to send it to them – you not only then retain the inmate discount, and reduce delays, but you also avoid having to pay two lots of postage charged. If you wish to send the book to the inmate direct you must choose the ‘public purchase’ option at the bottom of the page.
The check out seems to say the book will be delivered to me, the cardholder – and not the inmate? Don’t worry, we get a completely different order form to the receipt you get, and we know you are buying for an inmate because of the price you have paid. As long as you have put the prisoners’ details in the box when ordering, we ALWAYS receive this even if it is not displayed to you – so don’t worry – and if we are not 100% sure we will email you – or call you, if you entered your phone number during the check out process.
Postage: We send all books by recorded delivery, so they are signed for on receipt. If you want a book sent urgently we offer a next working day service – just select “Special Delivery” during the check out process.
