The Prisons Handbook 2018, which is about to be published, is the 20th edition of what is the definitive 1200-page annual guide to the prison system of England and Wales – published by Prisons Org UK.
The new edition is fully revised and updated and in addition to its usual comprehensive contents, this edition also has:
- A foreword by the Lord Chancellor and Secretary of State for Justice, Rt.Hon David Gauke MP;
- A critical exclusive assessment of the Crisis in our Prisons by the former Director General of HM. Prison Service, Phil Wheatley;
- An exclusive article by Parole Board Chief Executive Martin Jones, written in light of the recent John Worboys Case; and
- An Editorial entitled “Our Prison System Isn’t Creaking; Its Croaked” by Mark Leech, the book’s editor.
The 2018 edition of The Prisons Handbook is dedicated to the brilliantly irrepressible Faith Spear, who was sacked from her position as Chairman of the statutory Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) at HMP & YOI Hollesley Bay (and banned from prisons for five years), after she wrote an article for The Prisons Handbook 2016 – entitled ‘Whistle Blower Without A Whistle’. In this article, which broke no rules and named no-one (not even herself as it was written under a pseudonym) she lifted the lid on how these public IMB watchdogs are ‘gagged by grooming’ – theoretically able to speak out in public but terrified to do so lest they too should pay the same price that she did. Two years later Faith is still speaking up and out too and it is a privilege to dedicate this edition of The Prisons Handbook to her.
