Governors & PGDs

Pursuant to section 7(1) Prison Act 1952 every prison must have a Governor - the person in charge of the prison is known as the Governing Governor, They are responsible for everything that happens within the precincts of their prison, from staff issues including training and discipline, to security and the overall care, progress and rehabilitation of prisoners. This database contains a list of all current Governing Governors and the prisons to which they have been appointed. Please see the Prison Staff section for more information about prison governors and the system of promotion for them and prison staff generally.
